Windows Server 2008 R2 was shown off at the PDC (Professional Developers Conference) in LA. The first major change is that R2 brings is it’s the first 64-bit only Windows platform. There are also improvements to Windows Servers core pillars. Virtualisation has come on and has a great Live Migration feature which allows physical host migrations of virtual machines in little time. Streamlined management has also been enhanced with better user interfaces, an active directory domain service management console and enhanced group policy. Web server has better PowerShell management support and now has support for technologies including SilverLight and PHP. Another huge addition in R2 is DirectAccess which allows remote computing to become even more invisible to users. DA will allow users to connect to any network and see their network resources securely and without the need for VPN.
