“With sites across the UK we needed an up-to-date, reliable and robust solution that would enable all employees to communicate and share data efficiently wherever they were. We’re pleased with both the solution and service provided by Axon and look forward to working with the team over the coming years.”
IT Infrastructure Manager, Tarmac Building Products
The UK's leading heavy building materials producer, Tarmac Building Products, needed a unified platform to enable its 600 users to collaborate better across the company's 60 sites. The existing on-premise IT system had become outdated, with hardware out of warranty and machines still running Windows XP and Office 2003. Increased data storage was also required.
The firm needed a more modern and dependable approach to its IT needs that would improve efficiency and communications with a reliable support team in place to keep the business running.
Axon provided Tarmac Building Products with a hybrid cloud solution incorporating Microsoft Office 365 and Axon data centre services utilising virtualisation technologies.
Microsoft Office 365 is cloud computing from Microsoft. It enables businesses to collaborate and communicate more effectively, offering the latest versions of the Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote); Exchange Online - giving access to email, calendars and contacts; SharePoint Online - which provides intranet, content management and document storage facilities; and Lync Online - a communication tool offering instant messaging, audio and video calling, live web conferencing and online meetings - all hosted in the cloud and all available to users at any time, from any location with an internet connection and on any device.
We also migrated Tarmac’s internal intranet system from a physical on-premise server to a virtual server hosted in Axon’s data centre; deployed Windows Intune - a cloud-based asset management solution; and provided a full desktop refresh plus Windows smartphones.
Core networking and remote access services were also moved to our data centre with additional domain controllers located on Tarmac premises, and we now provide desktop, server, end user and printer support to Tarmac’s 600 users across the UK.
Through deploying a hybrid cloud solution - moving some of Tarmac’s data to Microsoft’s cloud and some to Axon’s cloud - Axon has successfully reduced the Tarmac server estate by 50%, resulting in a decrease in the cost of ownership and a reduction in the budget required to power, manage and maintain the firm’s hardware. Tarmac has reported a 40% annual reduction in costs by moving to the cloud.
Office 365 has introduced flexibility, enabling employees to work from any location with an internet connection, at any time and on any device. This has boosted productivity and provides the business with complete mobility. Tarmac now benefits from a consistently dependable solution with improved business continuity as a result of the flexibility cloud brings.
